Angel of Rotherhithe

More summer drinking fun. At the corner of Rotherhithe and Cathay streets is The Angel, a lovely 1930s grade-one listed pub looking out onto the river (which would be just to the left of the view above). Gorgeous woodwork inside, so great for winter drinking should you find yourself in Rotherhithe for some reason, but the pub really comes into its own in the summer, thanks to a large open space just next to the pub. It offers panoramic views of east London, with Tower Bridge looming to the left, the Thames sprawling out in front of you, and visions of chic, scenic Deptford to the right. If you're cycling along the south side of the river and you're out that way, it's well worth a visit.

Good pub tip, thanks. This is also a comment to see if the code I've added works for a recent comments list.

Actually, I had an idea for a bike ride that would take in Rotherhithe. Peter Ackroyd mentions seven Hawksmoor churches across the City from Bloomsbury to Greenwich and I had an idea to see them. How about an architectural perambulation, Pevsner in hand, one Sunday afternoon? How are you all fixed for August 20th/27th? I've sent a Google Earth attachment by email.

I'm not sure I have the coordination to cycle with my pevsner in my hand.

I'm around both of those weekends and would love to do this tour either weekend. Wendy will be in Scotland (taking over your midge duty) for at least one of these weekends, but i'm not sure which.

Just to get this to the top of the blog, how about this bike ride on the 20th or 27th? x

That second weekend sounds fab to me - would be nice to see Kev somewhere other than the mayor's testicle (and always at 9.01am).

If we do it on Monday the 28th (bank holiday), Wendy can come, too. (She's working Saturday and Sunday, earning that licence fee.)

Have downloaded google earth now - i really need to quit my job just to catch up with all the cool software out there, don't I?

This churchy cycle ride looks very nice. Closer my god to thee, etc...

Monday 28th sounds ideal at, say, 11am? I suggest a Bloomsbury start, onto Old Street and Bank, then to Spitalfields, Wapping and Limehouse, and then under the tunnel to Greenwich and a loop back to the Angel at Rotherhithe and wherever else. It should be about 10 miles or so. How does that grab you?

guys -that sounds good. not sure of my shift schedule at said testicle for that monday, so either meet you at 11, or meet you an hour in somewhere enroute. xk

Hey Kevin - just thought. You know this is a Bank Holiday? Does Ken work all the time?

So far I think this informative and entertaining bike ride involves jd, Wendy, Kevin B and myself. Toni Martinez will be winging his way back from the old country and arriving late (non-existent terror threats permitting) and I believe Bartley and Stephen are beginning their trip. The lure of Carnival exists for others. Let me know if there are other takers and I'll print up name badges, do the right amount of photocopying and make sure there are enough tests to go round at the end.
