Calls to ChildLine about homophobia and homophobic bullying

Remember all those mornings you've woken up and asked yourself, "I wonder what children who call ChildLine say about their experiences of homophobia and homophobic bullying?" Well, wonder no more - I've finished my mini-report on that issue, and it's available here (top link), along with some pieces I've done on other issues.

The report has received very good reviews from Stonewall and EACH (Educational Action Challenging Homophobia), both of whom are now working with ChildLine in various capacities as a result of it, so that's good.

Don't be shy about having a look if you have the time. It's mostly direct quotes from kids who call ChildLine, which makes it non-academic and easy to read. I would be interested in comments, should you have any.

Brilliant but sobering reading. How depressing that seemingly so little has changed in the 30 years since I began secondary school.

In point 4.3 in your report, the bit about sexuality becoming the whole of the identity issue for young gay people is quite right, I think. The closet is a weird thing. Have you ever read Epistemology of the Closet by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick? It's all a bit poncey, po-mo and literary. However the first chapter 'Axiomatic' sets out some quite good ideas about what the closet is as a kind of experience.

5.1. UNCRC - shame that sexuality is not mentioned explicitly here. Is it contained in these over-arching categories? I'm not sure. In 2003, some UN states (guess which?) blocked the UNHRC discussion about LGBT rights proposed by Brazil and pushed it into the next year but I can't remember if the following document was adopted. Do you know? I've just tried to have a look at the 60th session records but can't find anything about this.

5.4.3 Does LEA guidance about homophobic bullying in schools also apply to Academy schools and faith schools?

6.3.2. I've heard about this before. Boys fancying girls is gay. Did Childine make any comment about the Chris Moyles ruling?

More generally, do children who call get to speak to the same person on subsequent occasions if they wish?

Great stuff.
